The cash a business brings in from its work, minus what it spends on buildings and equipment. It is the money left to pay dividends, buy back shares or pay down debt. A company can show a profit and still have little free cash flow.
Example:
A company takes in $500 million and spends $200 million on new plants. Its free cash flow is $300 million.
