The first day a stock trades without its next dividend. To get the dividend, you must own the shares before this date. If you buy on or after it, the seller keeps the payment. The price often drops by about the dividend amount when trading opens that day.
Example:
The ex-dividend date is Thursday. To get the dividend, you must buy by the end of trading on Wednesday.
