A simple standard you compare your results with. For U.S. stocks the usual benchmark is the S&P 500, which SPY tracks. Beating it means you did better than you would have by buying SPY and holding it. Many funds and traders fall behind their benchmark over the years.
Example:
Your picks gained 8% while SPY gained 10%. You trailed the benchmark by 2 points.
